Dan walks right into the evolution vs. creation debate with his science project. He is excited about "Primeval Soup" and how it tells the story of evolution but now he has to worry whether he will lose his new, best friend, Alex. Alex believes in God and creation and wants Dan to change his project. Dan never gave church or God much thought until their friendship is threatened. "This was the perfect book for my son and his problem with a Christian friend," said one non-religious father whose son recently read Why Don't We Go to Church?. "The friend's dad keeps encouraging my son to 'seek the word'. It's one thing for me to tell my boy that not being religious is OK, but when he saw it in print, it became more acceptable," he said. Gail Miller and Rosalind Eagle wrote the book to help children and parents feel more comfortable when their non-belief in a deity is questioned.

As a non-theist family, it is often hard to explain to your children why most of their friends believe in one god or another and you don't. The book takes a fairly common situation that occurs between religious and nonreligious children and tries to explain it in terms they would understand. My daughter is eight and she gets it. However, the book is slow and very boooooring. The message is great and the subject is relevant. The ideas explored and explained are right on. It just needs to be made a tad bit more interesting. Perhaps more illustrations would help. Nevertheless, due to the serious dearth of books for families that are atheist, agnostic, Secular Humanist, or just not into religion, I would recommend this for a child in third or fourth grade. I would also recommend reading the book to the child and trying to make it a bit more interesting, rather than have hem struggle through it themselves.

Why Don't We Go to Church Gail Miller Rosalind Eagle Angela Seear 9780986587603 Books Reviews

One of the least talked about problems school kids face today is being hassled over religion. Some children are so convinced their beliefs are the only way to live that they want to force them onto their friends. This book, "Why Don't We Go to Church?" faces that issue in a way that is gentle and yet firm. It's one thing for non-religious parents to tell their children that everyone doesn't have to believe in a divine being nor attend religious services. But when kids see it printed in a book, the ideas become more truthful. This is a very new book, and I have heard it is already getting excellent reviews from sensible people around the world. I am happy to have been able to add my voice in support.
This book has a strong message and offers logical and fair information about evolution. The analogy the authors make about primeval soup helps the reader understand what the boy in the story is trying to deal with. I believe that this book is an effective tool for both parents and teachers to use when explaining the differences between creationism and evolution. This book offers a real life problem that many children face in their lives and gives the reader some information about how to solve those problems. Overall this book is well written and has a strong message that gives the reader something to think about.

Eric Campbell
The book "Why Don't We Go to Church?" by Gail Miller and Rosalind Eagle traces the adventure of Dan, a 9-year-old of an atheist family who discovers that his new friend at a new school is a fundamentalist Christian when they both are tasked by their teacher to develop a science project promoting evolution.

The book reads something like a diary of Dan. He talks about the difficulties of making friends, his excitement at becoming part of the "in" crowd, his confusion at dinner at the house of his new friend, and the self-doubts it engenders within him about his understanding of the beginnings of life and the value and conclusions of science. He experiences church with his friend's family and feels a little bit invalidated by them; but in the end, he becomes comfortable both with his own secular perspective as well as remaining friends with his religious peer.

The book runs ten chapters, each about 4-5 pages with some comic illustrations of the characters. Astute children will notice the "evolving" of a life form running through the chapter headings, from a single-celled animal to a dog. Some of the incidental situations in the book are a little contrived, I'm not sure a 9-year-old would be quite as logical or clear about his feelings as Dan shares in the book. But those moments don't detract from the focus and tone of the book.

In a world where books for atheist children are still too few, this is a very good entry poised to strike at filling that void.
My children love to read this book with me before bed. They request this almost everynight. Glad I picked it up.
